The NOLA Backstory Behind Every One of my Hand-Poured Candles
Y'all, if there's one thing I've learned in my decades of crafting candles right here in the heart of the New Orleans, it's that scent isn't just a smell – it's a story. It’s a memory, a feeling, a little whisper of our colorful, chaotic, utterly charming way of life in NOLA. Each candle I pour is a little piece of my heart, and a whole lot of the city's soul.
Take, for instance, Teddy's Fig Preserves. Oh, that one is pure love in a jar. It's a sweet, comforting aroma, a direct homage to my Mama Teddy and her magnificent 100-year-old family fig trees. Every time I smell it, I'm transported back to her kitchen, the air thick with the scent of simmering fruit and generations of family secrets. Then there's Second Line, a fragrance as lively and bright as its namesake parade. With its zesty kumquat orange, it captures the essence of those beautiful fruits that grow so abundantly around here in the fall, bursting with the very spirit of a spontaneous street celebration.
And let me tell you about some of my absolute bestsellers – these are the ones that truly resonate with the heart of New Orleans! White Hanky, for example, is all about that fresh, clean feeling. It's like slipping on a crisp linen shirt on a hot, humid day – pure, simple elegance that just feels right. And speaking of parades, Parasol was named for those beautiful, twirling accessories the gals hold as they Second Line down the street, whether it's during a vibrant Mardi Gras procession or after a joyous wedding. It's light, airy, and utterly enchanting.
But perhaps no candle sparks more conversation than Desire. You remember Tennessee Williams' famous story, "A Streetcar Named Desire?" Mr. Williams (no relation, by the way!) famously wrote that iconic book during the summer he lived right here in the heart of our city. For years, you could actually see the names on each streetcar, and everyone, absolutely everyone, wanted to ride Desire. Even today, when folks come to my booth and "test sniff" through all my fragrances, they'll inevitably exclaim, with a sigh, "I want Desire!" And without fail, I always respond, with a knowing smile, "Don't we all, honey?" It's a moment that always makes me chuckle, and it reminds me why I do what I do – bringing a little piece of that undeniable New Orleans allure to every home.
So come on in, explore our fragrances, and let the stories of New Orleans unfold in your own home. Let the good times roll!
